Bin Storage: Handmade Wooden Bin Stores

Brighton Bike Sheds builds wooden bin storage to order in our Sussex workshop. Select a standalone bin store for 2 to 6 wheelie bins, or add a double or triple bin store to a bike shed so bikes and bins sit under one continuous unit. Larch, cedar, painted slats or Corten steel.

Standalone bin stores from £1,083

If you want an aesthetically pleasing way to store your wheelie bins and bikes together, then our bin storage bike shed add-on is perfect. You can also add wheelie bin storage to your classic, slot-in, or vertical bike shed for even more storage options.

Our Range

Our Bin Storage Range

Three routes. Which one you want depends on whether bikes are part of the problem.

We clad and roof all three to the same specification, so a standalone bin storage unit or wooden bin store can be built to match a bike shed you already own. The full range of bin store sheds sits on the bin sheds page, and there are more bin storage ideas in our guide to storing bins.

Double and Triple Bin Stores

We build the add-on as a double bin store for 2 bins or a triple bin store for 3, sited to the left or right of your bike shed. Either can take a mid-height shelf in place of one or two bin spaces if you use recycling boxes.

Need four bins or more? The standalone Wheelie Bin Shed runs from 2 to 6. Households separating general waste, recycling, garden waste and food bins usually want that range.

Depth decides whether a bin fits, not width. A 240L bin is 720mm deep. Our open-topped bin storage is 900mm deep in every configuration, which clears it with 180mm to spare for the doors, the frame, and for manoeuvring.

Bike and Bin Storage in One Structure

We build the add-on as a double bin store for 2 bins or a triple bin store for 3, sited to the left or right of your bike shed. Either can take a mid-height shelf in place of one or two bin spaces if you use recycling boxes.

One Roof Bin Storage

One Roof is our most popular configuration and we build it for the Classic Bike Shed only. The bin store shares the roof and the front and back walls of the Classic, extending it continuously in width. No separate roof line, no visible join. The roof crosses both compartments in a single plane, in felt or living sedum.

Depth follows the Classic you choose. Base depths run from 800mm for one bike to 1350mm for six, so a deeper bike shed gives you a deeper bin store. A 3 bike Classic gives 900mm internally, which clears a 720mm deep 240L bin and leaves space behind it.

Open-Topped Bin Storage

Open-topped bin storage leaves the roof off the bin compartment. The walls and doors keep the bins screened from the front, and the tops stay open so you lift a lid without opening a door or rolling anything out.

Walls sit 180mm above the bins, capped along the top edge in a chunky timber surround that matches your cladding. From the pavement the bins are gone. They only reappear if you stand close and look down over the wall.

Depth is 900mm in every case, whichever bike shed it joins. We line it up along the rear wall of the bike shed as standard.

Which Bike Sheds Take Bin Storage?

Three of the four. We do not configure bin storage on the Cargo Bike Shed, so if you need cargo bike storage and bins together, ask us about a standalone unit alongside.

Size the bike side first and the bin store follows from it. Our guide to how big a bike shed should be worked through footprints by bike count and garden shape.

Wheelie Bin Sizes: Will Yours Fit?

UK wheelie bins are broadly standardised, though heights vary by manufacturer.

The 240 litre bin is the standard household size across most UK councils and the size we design around. Some run to 1180mm high depending who made them, so measure yours if it looks taller than standard. Tell us if your council issues 360L bins, which are 150mm deeper and 55mm taller than our design basis, and we will size the unit to them.

Wooden Bin Storage: Cladding and Roofs

We build every bin store to the same specification as our sheds. Diagonally braced timber frames in 50 x 50mm pressure treated studs, doubled at the corners, fixed with stainless or galvanised fixings. Roof rafters at 75 x 50mm on 400mm centres.

Cladding is fixed vertically and, in the slatted finishes, spaced so air moves through the bin compartment. Choose untreated Scottish Larch, pressure treated European pine in slats or tongue and groove, Western Red Cedar in slats or tongue and groove, or painted slats in Olive Green or Obsidian Grey. Cedar carries a BS EN 350 Class 2 durability rating. We also clad the Classic range and its add-ons in Corten steel. See cladding options for the full range.

Two roofs. Felt is a ply base with heavy duty felt, double layered at the lower edge. A living green roof is a ply base, a 1.2mm EPDM liner, filter fleece, 50mm of substrate and sedum rolls, held at the edges by triangular arrises. Saturated, that roof can pass 100kg per square metre, and we engineer the structure to carry it. Gutter and downpipe come as standard and drain to the left or the right.

A slatted timber bin store moves air through the bin compartment in a way a sealed plastic or metal unit does not. Wooden wheelie bin storage also takes a green roof, which no plastic unit will carry.

Front Garden Bin Storage

Most of our garden bin storage goes into front gardens.

Allow roughly a metre of depth against the wall or fence for a 900mm store plus roof overhang, and leave clear ground in front to swing the doors and pull a full bin out.

Where bikes and bins compete for the same strip of ground, put both under one roof for a continuous look. Or add an open topped unit if the bins are to be accessed from above.

Rules on where bins are kept between collections are set by your council, so check yours before fixing a position.

Good to know

What Is a Bin Store?

A bin store is a timber structure with doors that holds wheelie bins out of sight and lets them roll straight out on collection day. It has no floor. The wall frames rest on rubber feet that sit on a concrete or paved base so the bins run at ground level.

A bin storage shed is built to the size of the bin. We leave the floor out because bins need to roll, and we fit no lock, because there is nothing inside worth securing.

We design around the 240L household wheelie bin, the size most UK councils issue. Smaller bins drop straight in.

What Is a Bin Store?

Yes. Concrete or paving, level, across the full footprint. Our bin storage has no timber floor, which is the one structural difference from side storage. The wall frames rest on rubber feet on the base, and that is what lets the bins roll in and out with no lip to lift them over.

Grass, gravel and bare soil will not do. The frame needs fixing and the bins need a hard surface to run on. Access, timings and what our team does on the day are covered on the delivery and installation page.

What Is a Bin Store?

No. We fit no locks to bin storage, in the add-on or the standalone units. Bins have to come out on collection day and there is nothing inside worth securing. Some customers use our bin sheds in their back gardens to house items inside such as BBQs, furniture, etc.

Where bin storage joins a bike shed, the bike side is untouched. You keep the full security specification: a hardened steel long throw lock coach bolted to the door frame with four high security keys, two galvanised drop bolts on every set of double doors, heavy duty galvanised hinges fixed with one-way screws, and a galvanised steel SecureBar inside for a D-lock or chain. A solid internal partition divides the two compartments, so an open bin store gives no route to your bikes.

Recycling Boxes and Mixed Bin Sets

Recycling boxes sit on and under a mid-height shelf, added on the configurator. A double width shelf takes two boxes on top and two below. A single width shelf takes one above and one below. The shelf occupies one or two bin spaces depending on the unit you choose.

If you use boxes throughout rather than wheelie bins, select the standalone Recycling Box Shed instead. We build it for the job, with clear space above the boxes so you can drop items in without lifting anything out.

Bespoke Bin Storage

If it can be built from timber, we will build it. A bespoke bin store covers non-standard widths, L-shaped runs around a corner, mixed bin and box compartments, and units sized to a council bin that is not a standard 240L.

Send a bespoke enquiry with the dimensions of th space, the number and type of bins, and a photograph or sketch of the layout. We come back with a detailed quotation at no cost.

How to Order

  1. Pick the route: bin storage combined with a bike shed, a standalone Wheelie Bin Shed, or a Recycling Box Shed.
  2. For the add-on, choose the bike shed first, then set bike capacity, cladding and roof.
  3. Add bin storage from the add-ons menu: One Roof or open-topped, 2 or 3 bins, left or right.
  4. Add a mid-height shelf for recycling boxes, and a log store or parcel safe on either side if you want them.
  5. Order online with free delivery to UK mainland addresses, or send a bespoke enquiry for a non-standard size.
Every standard product comes as self-assembly, with Premium Installation offered in selected locations. Current lead times are shown in the banner at the top of every page.

Bin Storage FAQs

Can I Add Bin Storage to a Bike Shed I Already Own?
No, it is not possible to add on later. It’s just a standalone. Bin storage shares the bike shed’s frame, and on a One Roof build its roof, so it is not a bolt-on accessory.
Yes. A small or large log store and a parcel safe both go on either side of your bin storage. We build the log store with treated slatted flooring for airflow, facing the same direction as the bin doors.
A One Roof bin store is enclosed on all sides and above, with the bike shed’s roof carrying over the bins. An open-topped store is enclosed on its sides but open to the sky, so it screens the bins rather than covering them. The standalone Wheelie Bin Shed is fully roofed.
Tell us before you order. A 360L bin is 870mm deep and 1115mm high against the 720mm and 1060mm of the 240L bin we design around, so we need to check both the depth and the wall height against your configuration.
Yes, as a standalone unit. We only build the add-on version as part of a bike shed order, because it shares that shed’s frame and cladding. For bins on their own, select a Wheelie Bin Shed or Recycling Box Shed, either of which we can clad to match a bike shed you already have.

Untreated Scottish Larch and Western Red Cedar are naturally durable and need no annual treatment. Cedar holds a BS EN 350 Class 2 rating, the second highest of the five natural durability classes. Both weather to a silver grey over the first two years without losing structural performance.

If you want an aesthetically pleasing way to store your wheelie bins and bikes together, then our bin storage bike shed add-on is perfect. Add wheelie bin storage to your classic, slot-in, or vertical bike shed for even more storage options.

Our Bin Storage Add-On Options

We offer a number of options for our wheelie bin storage add-ons, and each offers a unique set of benefits. Take a look at our options.

One Roof Bin Storage

Our most popular bin shed add-on. The one Roof bin storage shares the roof and the back/front walls of the Classic shed to which they are seamlessly attached. The One Roof bin storage option extra is available for the Classic Shed only.

Unlike Side Storage, Bin Storage has no timber floor. The wall frames bolt to the concrete or paved base, making it easy to roll the bins in or out of the shed. Also, the bin store has no locks.

We build these units with a solid internal partition between bins and bike shed, and a unified roof (for the Classic Shed only, felt or green), making it both robust and great to look at.

The depth of the bin storage will correspond to the Classic bike shed that you have selected. There will be some spare space behind the bins if you order a Classic shed for 3 or more bikes.

Please note: all references to ‘left’ or ‘right’ sides are when standing in front of the shed, looking at the front doors.

Bin storage add-on with the roof open, showing space for wheelie bins

Open-Topped bin storage

The less-than-attractive appearance of your bins is fully masked by the chosen cladding, while the tops of the walls are capped in a chunky matching timber surround.

The walls and doors stay in place, while the roof is left open, enabling the lids of the bins to be easily accessed. The walls are 180mm higher than the bins, meaning that they stay hidden unless standing near to and looking over the shed.

The depth of the open-topped bin storage will be 900mm in all cases. On installation, it will be lined up along the rear wall of the bike shed as standard.

Please note: all references to the ‘left’ or ‘right’ sides are when standing in front of the shed, looking at the front doors.
